Minisink Valley's local teachers' union put its money where its mouth is:

THE 2006 MVTA CRAFT FAIR AND GOLF TOURNAMENTS ARE HUGE SUCCESSES!

From the very beginning, teachers belonging to the Minisink Valley Teachers’ Association have spent countless hours not just inside but also outside their classrooms to ensure that a large majority of our beloved kids become college-bound students. From kindergarten on, we encourage all our students to be lifelong learners and to get all the education they can.  It's not only the high school teachers who write recommendations and give advice on which schools to think about attending after graduation. We all do!

In addition to giving Minisink students the academic tools and references they need for success, we give them hope and guidance. Moreover, every year we award substantial scholarships.  This autumn our local teachers' union, the MVTA, worked hard at two events, the first annual MVTA Golf Tournament as well as our annual MVTA October Craft Fair. Under the direction of high school teacher Michael Burns, the Golf Tournament raised $2000!

The annual MVTA Craft Fair embraces the entire community -- teachers, parent volunteers, student volunteers, the administration, and the community at large. This year the chairperson was Meg Catizone, also a high school teacher like Michael. Our Craft Fair has traditionally been the primary way we raise the money to reward several of our most worthy high school seniors. Nearly all their lives, from age 5 to 18, we've been teaching our children to value education. Each year we've "put our money where our mouths are" by funding scholarships to help them achieve their personal career goals after they leave our care. We are so proud of our Minisink grads!

This year the MVTA Craft Fair netted an unprecedented $5,000!  There were 61 vendors who were very successful. Most of them have indicated that they intend to return next year.  In addition to the vendors' fees, the scholarship fund earned money from the bake sale, raffles, face painting and children’s crafts. As they do every year, many, many teachers spent hours planning the fair, setting it up in the gym, working at it, baking for it, and cleaning up afterwards. The Bake Sale table, filled with creations made by teachers and parents and other MVTA friends, netted close to $800. The raffles netted $600, and the snack bar matched that $600 amount.  Our local Girl Scouts and intermediate school art teacher Roberta Fair worked the entire day at face painting and children’s crafts. They not only made money, but they made children happy too!

Minisink Teachers are the very best! Meg wants to thank all of her committee chair people and all of the other teachers who supported this effort.  Teachers and some administrators and district residents who could not give time to work at the Craft Fair or to bake nevertheless supported this event with monetary donations, and we are most grateful!  It is clear that we had almost 100% support from the faculty who feel that this activity is what we are all about.  Students of Minisink Valley are what we are all about!

More information on the scholarship fund raising events will be given in the next MVTA newsletter.
